What is an Information System?

In a broad sense, the term (IS) refers to the interaction between people, processes, and technology. This interaction can occur within or across organizational boundaries. It’s not only the technology an organization uses, but also the way in which organization’s people interact with the technology and the way the technology works with the business process. An information system has an information technology component that interacts with the people and process components.

The information system consists of 5 parts; people, procedures, software, hardware and data. Critical to most information systems are information technologies, which are typically designed to enable humans to perform tasks for which the human brain is not well suited, such as: handling large amounts of information, performing complex calculations, and controlling many simultaneous processes.

What is MIS?

An “MIS” is a planned system of the collecting, processing, storing and disseminating data in the form of information needed to carry out the functions of management. In a way it is a documented report of the activities that where planned and executed. MSI is a subset of the overall internal controls of a business covering the application of people, documents, technologies and procedures by management accountants to solve business problems such as costing a product service or a business-wide strategy. It has been described as, “MIS ‘lives” in the space that intersects technology and business. MIS combines tech with business to get people the information they need to do their jobs better, faster, and smarter.

Information Systems are products of Information Technology delveloped which enables storage, manipulation and distribution of information. IT is the branch or sector which deals with the management of information.

How do successful business professionals use IS?

To handling data about the business activities and transactions by tracking data, flow, processing and output of the business. Information systems are used today for almost every activity in a successful business. Uses range from e-mail to invoicing, inventory, payroll, and billing. It speeds up the processes, uses fewer people, and improves efficiency and accuracy.

My opinion on IS in a business.

Wireless/cellular communications, today you can buy a cell phone that is capable of doing as much if not more than a computer in home or office.
